Blog 23-02-13 Motivational Quotes and their Power– Four of my Favorite Motivational Quotes and Why

Hi guys,

This is another one as originally published on Yofittv.com, check out their new look it’s quite cool.

Over the past few weeks we’ve been looking at our motivation and now we’ll look at using motivational quotes. I like these because they mean something to me. Don’t worry there’s none of the “You are beautiful” or “You deserve to be loved” stick-it-on-your-bathroom-mirror kind of stuff here.

Obviously everybody motivates themselves differently and it doesn’t matter what works for you; If it works, great! But a good quote will work for most people, which is why you see a lot of them posted on Facebook and similar social network sites. You don’t have to read one every day but it might just get you off the couch when you feel like slacking off.

The first quote is; Some succeed because they are destined. Most succeed because they are determined.– Anonymous

This is one that separates the successful from those who fail. If you think you are “destined” to have a great body odds are you will fail. Only determined people will get into shape. Determination and motivation is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING in fitness. Sure genetics play a part, but not for most people. I very often hear people say things like “I have a hard time gaining muscle”. The only response to that is “Yes you do, because you don’t work hard enough!” I know very few hard-gainers, but I know plenty of people who think they are.

If someone says; “I have a slow metabolism which is why I can’t lose weight” the correct response is almost always “No, you can’t lose weight because you don’t put the effort in!”.

Determination is everything, make sure you get some!

The second; Remember that happiness is a way of travel, not a destination. – Roy Goodman

One of the things I hear a lot during an initial consultation is “I just want to feel better about myself” and the honest truth is that though losing 10 lbs might make you feel more comfortable walking around in a bikini, it won’t make you happy. It really, honestly, won’t. Exercise itself will do an awful lot for your self-esteem and happiness. Endorphins, the little hormones which make you feel nice and are released whilst you exercise, are wonderful things and they will make you feel good. But if you’re not happy now, the happiness you will feel when you finally fit into a bikini will be fleeting. You should have a long-term goal but at the same time realise that living a full-filled and happy life is, essentially, the only goal that really matters.

The third; Fall down seven times, get up eight. –  Japanese proverb.

This is such an important one. I talk about this a lot with people who have failed previously. It doesn’t matter that you failed previously. It really, REALLY, doesn’t. If you signed up to a gym last year, trained hard for the first three months and then let it slip away from you a bit, that just makes it easier to succeed the next time you try. You should have learned something from the last time you tried, picked up what worked/ what didn’t work. What caused you to slip? What did you like to do the last time? What kind of exercises worked for you? Etc. Etc. All those questions you should now have an answer to. This will make it easier for you to plan to succeed. And even if you do fail again, you will have learned something from that.

And finally, related to the last one, “If you’re tired of starting over, stop giving up”– Anonymous.

Do whatever it takes to stick at it! It doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to give up smoking, cut down drinking, lose some weight, get into shape or become a powerhouse. If you need help, ask for it! Use any tool you can; whether it’s a motivational quote, Facebook, friends, a workout-buddy or a personal trainer. Stick with it through the tough times and you’ll be happy you did.

Take care.

Your friend,

Peter
