I had a chat with someone the other day who said “I just don’t like exercise, so I don’t. I just can’t be bothered doing something I don’t enjoy”. This person didn’t walk, cycle, swim, run, lift heavy things or, indeed, stretch and it showed. And that situation made me write this little blog as I think it’s important to point out the following;
EXERCISE IS NOT OPTIONAL!
There is this myth doing the rounds, and I part blame the UK government and the UK school system for cancelling Physical Education in a lot of schools as if it’s something that isn’t essential to kids’ health, that exercising is something you only do when you feel like it.
Let me repeat this as it seems a lot of people don’t understand this;
If you want decent cardio vascular health; exercise is not optional.
If you don’t want to die younger than you should; exercise is not optional.
If you don’t want to have a miserable old age; exercise is not optional.
If you don’t want to suffer a multitude of, preventable, illnesses and injuries throughout your life; exercise is not optional!
If you would like to be even remotely flexible and to be able to tie your own shoelaces past the age of 60; exercise is not f’ing optional!
If you would like to look like a remotely healthy human being; exercise is not optional.
If you want to be able to play with your grandkids without having to sit down every 5 minutes; exercise is not optional.
If you want to be able to walk up a few flights of stairs without feeling like you’re having a heartattack; exercise is not optional.
If you want to be able to enjoy life to the fullest for as long as possible; exercise is just not F’ing optional!
So please; Do some heavy lifting, some cardio and stretch every now and again. Here is what you really should do to function at your peak, but really anything is better than nothing.
