Hi guys,
Ever heard of Bark.com? It’s one of those new “We’ll do the work for you and have professionals come to you” sort of sites. It started about a year or so ago and I’ve been seeing it pop up more and more. We signed up to Bark when it was still free just when it came out and I noticed something funny; None of the “clients” they had actually ever responded. So I stopped using them. I still get email notifications from them whenever someone “requests” Personal Training in the area.
I’ll briefly explain why I think going through a site like Bark is a bad idea when you’re looking for a Personal Trainer.
1; PTs have to pay to send you a message. Anywhere upto £6 a pop. And this is just to “tender” for the work. No self respecting Personal Trainer will do this. No professional will spend that much money just to send you a message.
2; You need to find the right PT for you. You have to ask yourself the following questions; Why am I going to go to a PT? What am I hoping to achieve? Who, in my area, is an expert in their field? Bark doesn’t give you that information. Even worse; someone who’s an expert in their field won’t go through a site like Bark simply because you don’t give them the right information to.
3; I personally like it when I know potential clients have taken the time to go and have a look at 2 or 3 Personal Trainers’ websites/blogs/Facebook pages or maybe even have met them. This shows me that they are serious about working on themselves. This might sound a little bit snooty but you are making a big investment in yourself when you choose to work with a PT. Most of the PTs in Edinburgh charge £30+ an hour, you need to make sure you get the right one for you and don’t just pick someone sent to you by a site that gets paid to send these guys to you.
4; Sites like Bark do no control checks. Bark doesn’t know if your PT is qualified. They don’t know if he’s insured. They don’t know if he’s any good. And they don’t care because they get paid by the PT.
You, as the customer using Bark, might think that they have put some effort in but they really haven’t. Please stay away from sites like Bark and do the legwork yourself. If you can’t even be bothered sitting behind your laptop for a couple of hours looking for the right PT how on earth are you going to get through those sessions and stick to your diet plan?
Get it right guys and take care of yourself.
Peter
